One question I often get from people is “Which is better for weight loss: cardio or strength training?” The short answer is a combination of both.
“OK, so which should I do first?”
Like the age-old question, which came first, the chicken or the egg, the bottom line is that it doesn’t matter. You cannot have one without the other. If your goal is to lose weight and become lean, you need both to succeed. Whatever works for you is best.
Some benefits of cardio exercise:
-increase blood flow throughout the body
-improve the efficiency if the delivery of nutrients through the bloodstream
-the release of endorphins can improve mental health
-increase your stamina and reduces fatigue
-combined with a healthy diet and strength training, aerobic exercise with help you lose weight
Some benefits of strength training:
-burn fat at rest. Your muscles burn fat while you are resting so building lean mass is key to fat loss.
-can reduce the risk and symptoms of:
- back pain
-maintain a healthy weight by improving your metabolism.
-shown to reduce blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels
Bottom line, in my experience workout programs that include a mix of both cardio and strength training get the best results. If you don’t have a lot of time, interval training is my recommendation. Stay tuned for more details on interval training…
