NYC and Gluten Free Bakery Adventures

I had an amazing weekend with some of the most amazing women I know. I unfortunately realized I don’t have the great group shot that was taken of us on one of our train adventures. I will have to ask Mo from Food Snob or Carol from Uncovering Food, if they would not mind letting me have a copy.

What I do have is some tales of finding amazing food in the many restaurants that line the streets of Manhattan and Queens. Today myself, Mo and LK from Healthy Delicious, decided that were were going to go into Manhattan for another day of discovering great new eateries before we needed to end (insert Sad Panda face here) our girl adventure weekend.

We visited to so many places this weekend that I decided to dedicate a separate post to each of my favorite restaurants because each place is unique in its own way and space. I start off with one of my favorites…

Tu-lu’s Gluten Free Bakery

Tu-lu’s (aka Tully’s) Gluten Free Bakery is not only a new Mom on the Run find but is also new to the NYC scene, opening a little over a month ago. You don’t know how excited I was to find a gluten-free bakery that sold the most amazing looking cupcakes. After being diagnose with a gluten sensitivity in December,  I have struggled to find great tasting substitutes for things I love. Cupcakes have been one of those things. Usually when we visit NYC, we frequent such establishments as Crumbs and Magnolia Bakery to get our fill of cupcake goodness. Now that I must seek gluten free alternatives, I am always up for finding a good quality bakery. Tu-lu’s definitely fits above and beyond my sweet baked good dreams.

Tu-lu’s is owned and operated by our most gracious bakery host this morning, Tully.  Tully was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance in 2008, and as a trained chef began creating ways to still enjoy her favorite gluten-laden foods such as, pizza and sandwich bread. She has found a way to make bake goods that are gluten free and taste like their gluten counterparts. That began the creation of Tully’s Bakery to provided for other gluten-free people a great tasting treat. You must go visit her for a sweet treat breakfast of champions of these:

IMG_4176 A trio of Tully’s min-cupcakes (I choose the Vanilla-Strawberry, Red Velvet, and Peanut Butter Chocolate minis). The cake was moist and flavorful. Sometimes with gluten free baking the texture of the cake becomes spongy or grainy. Tully has created a cupcake that is neither of those things. The frosting was not too sweet and a compliment to the cake. I also purchased the cinnamon coffee cake and jalapeno cornbread to sample and share.

There was to many things on the menu that I wanted to try including gluten-free Panini’s. Of course I brought some back to the family. The also appreciated a great tasting cupcake.

IMG_4185 You really can’t choose a favorite flavor. They are all so good. I was utterly pleased by the jalapeno cornbread. It was AMAZING! I brought some extras home to have with my lunch time chili tomorrow. YUM :)

If you are ever in the NYC area and craving a bakery treat, you must visit Tu-lu’s, even if you are not gluten intolerant. The baked good are unique and you will not be disappointed. Please tell Tully I sent you :)

Off to recuperate from the weekend adventures!
